Topsy-Turvy Doll

Black Side

This special Topsy-Turvy Doll was sent by Clarksburg Elementary School to Japan.

American cloth dolls have a certain charm that is all their own. In the early days of this country, they were often a child's first toy -- cuddly and soft. Many designs were made by mothers for their children.

"Topsy-Turvy" or "Two-in-One" dolls first appeared in the South in the 1800s. It is widely believed that they were made by servants, sewn from saved dress scraps. Mothers likely made these dolls for their children as well. Though a very popular style, sadly few of these well-loved dolls have survived over time. This is a handmade, hand-painted reproduction doll.
