Mary arrived at Watauchi Elementary School from America in 1927, so after many years her hair did not look very nice. Therefore, a small group of sixth-grade students at Watauchi Elementary in Nagano decided to solicit ideas from other students for a new wig. In October 2001, these students sent letters to two local companies to inquire about making a new wig for Mary. Both of these companies quickly agreed to work together on making a new wig for Mary so it would be ready for the opening of the exhibit at Shinano Education Museum on November 15, 2001. Mary's new hair can be seen in the photo at right. |
