Location Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C.) The most exquisite Japanese Friendship Doll, Miss Dai Nippon (or Miss Japan), was a gift of the Japanese Imperial household to America. Miss Japan also went by the name Hideko Yamato. Yamato is the ancient name for Japan. Sidney L. Gulick described Miss Japan as a doll of "exceptional dignity, beauty and rank." She came with luxurious accessories such as lacquer chest, two pedestal lanterns with silk shades, a tea ceremony set, a daily tea set, a fan, and three silk parasols. Miss Japan even came accompanied by a smaller Japanese doll who served as her attendant. Although Miss Japan was displayed for many years at the Smithsonian Institution (previously named the National Museum), she now lies in a storage box at the Smithsonian Institution. |
