Kako

The photo at left shows a doll in the Resource Center at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. In 1998, Miss Kagawa returned to Japan for refurbishment. Some 11 months later the Miss Kagawa Homecoming Committee returned the 1927 doll to North Carolina, where she continues to be kept at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

Kako, the doll at left, is one of Miss Kagawa's three "little sisters," created in celebration of the return of Miss Kagawa to North Carolina. The first part of her name, "Ka," is taken from the word Kagawa and the old Japanese word for California, "Kashu." The last part of her name, "ko," means child and is a frequently used ending in Japanese girls' names.
